A woman was pronounced dead on Saturday after apparently drowning at Wainscott Beach.
East Hampton Town Police believe Elizabeth A. Hummer, 58, of Wainscott entered the ocean just west of the entrance to the beach, on Beach Lane in Wainscott. She was found adrift shortly afterward by someone on the beach at the time.
Town Police also said that the cause of death likely was related to a medical event, and that ocean conditions were not a factor.
Police and Bridgehampton emergency medical service responders were called to the scene at 2:36 p.m., after she had been pulled out of the water, unresponsive, by the other beachgoer. Police said that all efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
Wainscott Beach is not a lifeguard-protected beach, and there was no lifeguard assigned to the ocean area where the woman was found.
The incident is still being investigated by the police department and the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office.
