East Hampton Town Police stationed extra police officers at East Hampton High School on Wednesday morning following what turned out to be an inaccurate rumor circulated that a student had threatened to bring a gun to the school in the wake of a conflict between two students.
East Hampton Superintendent of Schools Adam Fine said that police interviewed students Wednesday morning and determined that the rumor was wholly untrue and have deemed the situation safe. He said police were called out of an abundance of caution.
“There was never a direct threat to the school, but when we found out — I was on the treadmill here at the high school — we called East Hampton Town Police and asked them to help us out,” Fine said. “There were some extra uniformed patrols at the school this morning. They interviewed the parties alleged to be involved and determined there was nothing credible. Thank god.”
