Members of the Springs School Journalism Club are writing articles on the goings-on at their school. The Press is publishing certain selections from the club throughout the school year.

Sneaker Drive Update

In the month of February, Springs School had a sneaker drive. Victoria Firemark, the Diversity Club coordinator, decided it was time to try to reuse old shoes and said that the club needed to recycle them.

Members of the club used the Gotsneakers Foundation for help. Students and teachers had one month to donate sneakers, which were put in cardboard boxes. The Diversity Club then put all the sneakers in 12 special bags which were then mailed to the Gotsneakers organization.

The organization recently gave an update. They stated that three pairs of sneakers were in excellent condition, 26 pairs were in good condition, 26 pairs were in fair condition and 53 pairs were recycled. Eighteen nonathletic shoes were donated.

The Diversity Club saved 126 pairs of shoes from going into landfills, 3,780 pounds of carbon dioxide were displaced, and they saved 284,382 gallons of water from going to waste. For all 126 pairs of shoes, the Diversity Club received $99 back.

End of the School Year

In other news, The Journalism Club at Springs School has come to end for this school year. Both Bill Sutton, the managing editor and reporter Desiree Keegan from The Express News Group were essential to the success of our club by publishing our articles each week. Without them, the community would never have been aware of the happenings of our school. We are most grateful for all of their hard work and help.

For now, we will retire our reporting notebooks and embrace the end of the 2023/2024 school year and summer vacation.
