Members of the Springs School Journalism Club are writing articles on the goings-on at their school. The Press is publishing certain selections from the club throughout the school year.

Diversity Club Is Back

Diversity Club is back and better than ever. This club supports students in different ways. First, it focuses on celebrating people’s differences and being kind and welcoming to all.

Vicki Firemark continues to be the club’s coordinator, and during a recent interview she stated, “Diversity Club is a student-run group that focuses on spreading awareness and acceptance of people’s differences.”

Sixth-graders Julia Stillman and Saoirse Quinn are students who belong to the club. They thought it sounded like fun to belong to something that makes people feel welcome.

Sometimes the Diversity Club goes on field trips. One trip was in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., who always emphasized the importance of being of service within one’s community.

To show “service,” students in the club cleaned up places in the community. For example, recently there was a field trip to Pussy’s Pond to pick up litter.

October is ADHD Awareness Month. To acknowledge and learn more about this disability, the Diversity Club completed a research project. Members researched celebrities who have ADHD and created informative posters that are on display in the school’s hallway. Some of the celebrities featured are Taylor Swift, Ryan Gosling and author/cartoonist Dav Pilkey.

Two teachers came to talk with the students in Diversity Club about their personal struggles with this disability.

Meghan Payne stated, “As a kid, I did not cope with it well, but when I got to college I got better.”

She also explained that she uses a calendar to help her stay organized each week. Payne was excited to spread awareness for people who have learning disabilities.

Additionally, Pamela Furey spoke to the Diversity Club. She stated that she now considers ADHD to be her superpower because she can multitask very well.
