A 50-foot sailboat from Newport, Rhode Island, suffered a catastrophic rigging failure while sailing past Long Island on Sunday, August 20.
The sailboat, Defiance, was about 12 miles southwest of Montauk Point when the rigging failure occurred, sending the boat’s 80-foot mast and hundreds of square feet of sails collapsing into the water. The boat sent out a distress call and was towed into Montauk Harbor by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The boat was tied to the small pier adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Montauk on Monday, its mast and sails still in the water beneath it.
None of the people aboard the boat was injured, the Coast Guard said.
