In Heidi Wilson’s media center class at Sag Harbor Elementary, students in grades one through five recently completed a unit on mindfulness. The students discussed what mindfulness is and its effect on learning, performance and mental health. Using visualization, meditation practices, and lessons on breath work, the students put what they’ve learned into action. Together the students learned about the body’s three-part nervous systems and even embarked on some beginner yoga poses for a holistic approach to education and movement that can be practiced in and outside of school.
