Pierson Student
Receives Good Citizen Award

Pierson High School senior Caroline McGuire has recently received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. This award is granted to a high school senior who demonstrates service, leadership and patriotism. Only one student per year may be honored as a school’s DAR Good Citizen. Selected students are recommended by their peers and teachers for their exemplary behavior.

“She was chosen due to her outstanding contributions to our school and community including — HUGs/Long Island Teen Institute,” said Margaret Mott, Pierson college and career counselor. The HUGS program, which stands for Human Understanding and Growth Services, provides an environment for individuals, families, schools and communities to learn education prevention strategies for “high-risk” behaviors and instead instill wellness and positive attitudes. The Long Island Teen Institute sector provides a leadership development and substance misuse training program for middle and high school students who are natural leaders.

In addition to McGuire’s work within the community, she has been part of the Student Council, Model UN, and the tech/stage crew team for Sag Harbor school theater productions. She is also a volleyball player and a lacrosse player.

“Overall her spirit and enthusiasm are what make her a standout,” said Mott.
