Southampton Town and Southampton Village will continue to pick up tree limbs broken off by Hurricane Irene until next week.
The village will collect the branches that are left on the shoulder of the road until Wednesday, September 7, the Department of Public Works announced on Friday. Leaves and other debris will not be accepted, and the cleanup is for homeowners only, no contractors. Once a road is cleaned, village workers will not return to it, the department said.
Southampton Town Highway Department trucks are also doing a curbside pickup, and Town Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor is asking residents to separate branches into “large” and “small” piles; branches in the small pile cannot exceed 3 inches in diameter. The larger pile can include things like long tree branches and even tree stumps.
Town residents also can drop their yard waste off at the Westhampton, North Sea and Hampton Bays transfer stations for free until Sunday, September 4. This applies to town residents only, and excludes contractors, said Town Spokeswoman Jennifer Garvey. All four of the town’s transfer stations in Westhampton, Hampton Bays, North Sea and Sag Harbor also will be open until 5 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. Normal operating hours will resume Tuesday, September 6.
Sag Harbor Village highway crews are collecting debris from village properties free of charge. The wood is being chipped and mixed with leaves and other brush at a village-owned property adjacent to the Southampton Town transfer station on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike.
Shower facilities at the Southampton Youth Services Center are available for residents who remain without power and have no well water. The center, located on Majors Path in Southampton, can be reached by phone at 287-1511. Town officials are asking residents to bring their own toiletries and towels.
