Betty Franey was a founding member of the Accabonac Protection Committee and at the group’s annual party on Sunday she was fondly remembered for her tireless devotion to the organization. The Friend of the Creek award was given to her children. Also discussed was the restoration of the Barbara Hale reserve, the upcoming Springs clean-up, preserving the Potter property next to the Pollock House and the kayak situation at Louse Point. Then we ate.
I jinxed myself last week when I mentioned in my column that the first group art show I sponsored opened the same day Hurricane Bob came to town in 1992. Since then, we’ve always had good weather except last Saturday, when it poured. We were rained on, but we were not rained out. We put a tarp over the portico outside Ashawagh Hall so the band wouldn’t get drenched or electrocuted. Vanessa set up her bar, put the food out, tapped the keg and the people came. Lots of people. The Surf Dogs played until almost 10 p.m. and a good time was had by all.
The show is up until Sunday, September 14, and the hall is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. On that Sunday, there will be a potluck party from 1 to 5 p.m. Music will be provided by the Surf Dogs and Rite of Way. Everybody is welcome, just bring a pot. It’s a great show so try to check it out. The artists are Lisa Weston, Bill Durham, Nick Tarr, Mary Laspia, Joanlee Montefusco, Tom LaGrassa, Karyn Mannix, Bill Kiriazis, Marcie Honerkamp, Abby Abrams, Lewis Zacks, James Kennedy, Trish Franey, Evan Zatti, Mary Antczak, Gerry Giliberti, Grant Haffner, James DiMartis, J. Scott McCoy, Kristi Hood, Dennis Leri, Sam Muggeo, and Barbra Gerard.
There will be a Springs Advisory Committee Meeting on Monday, September 15, at 7 p.m. at Ashawagh Hall. Diana Weir will be speaking about housing issues. She is executive vice president of the Long Island Housing Partnership. The meeting will focus on how to help keep our kids from moving away because of the high cost of housing, either when buying or renting. Also discussed will be programs that help teachers, firefighters and others to afford to live here.
The Springs Presbyterian Church will be hosting a barbecue chicken dinner on Saturday, September 13. I don’t know what they do to those chickens but they are the tastiest birds in town. I wonder if we can get them to do a wild turkey barbecue? Those birds are everywhere.
I haven’t begged for money in quite a while so here goes. The Springs Improvement Society has got its building fund debt down to about $130,000 but we would like to get it down to $100,000. If anyone is feeling generous, please send a check payable to the SIS Building Fund at P.O Box 537, East Hampton NY 11937.
