Stony Brook Southampton Hospital last week announced that it has hired a new chief administrative officer after a lengthy search to replace Robert Chaloner, who was the hospital’s top administrator for 16 years before leaving last year.
Emily Mastaler is currently the president and CEO of River Hospital, a rural health care provider upstate that she has led since 2019. She will take over at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital on May 20, the hospital said.
Prior to River Hospital, Mastaler was chief operating officer of Health Care and Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont from 2014 to 2019, where she had previously worked in clinical care.
“I am truly honored for the incredible opportunity to join the Stony Brook Medicine and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital team,” Mastaler said in a statement released by the hospital on February 21. “I am strongly aligned with their unyielding commitment to the sustainability of exceptional health care within a diverse community. It is clear, Stony Brook Medicine has elevated the well-being of the East End communities, and I am thrilled to advance this mission in strong collaboration with our community partners, staff and patients.”
Mastaler holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Northeastern University, a Master of Arts in psychology from Antioch University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Elmira College.
Stony Brook has been searching for a new chief administrative officer since Chaloner stepped down last March, originally to take on a fundraising role spearheading the plans for a new hospital on the Stony Brook Southampton college campus, but ultimately leaving the hospital altogether in June to take a position at a Wisconsin medical center.
Stony Brook executives this week celebrated Mastaler as a leader well suited to tackle Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s important role in the South Fork community.
“Throughout Mastaler’s career she has been committed to cultivating diversity, inclusion and health equity,” Dr. William Wertheim, interim executive vice president of Stony Brook Medicine, said in a statement. “We look forward to her becoming a champion for change who promotes initiatives that serve the very diverse eastern Long Island community.”
Dr. Fredric Weinbaum, the longtime chief medical officer and chief operating officer who has also been serving as the hospital’s chief administrator since Chaloner’s departure, will remain in his medical and COO roles when Mastaler arrives in May, the hospital said.
“We are fortunate to have Emily Mastaler’s extensive health care knowledge, clinical expertise and ability,” Carol Gomes, Stony Brook University Hospital’s CEO said. “She will play a vital role as we continue to grow and deliver on our commitment of providing access to Stony Brook Medicine’s medical experts, specialists and services throughout all our East End communities.”
