Strong Support

As a member of the inaugural group of oyster farmers four years ago, under the direction of John Dunne, who is project director, I strongly support the East Hampton Town proposal to develop the existing house for educational purposes, as well as adding 5,000 square feet for the hatchery [“Opposition Grows In Springs,” August 14].

There is adequate parking at the Gann Road dock. My wife and I walk daily to the lot and have never seen it full. The hatchery work would require only a few full-time workers bringing their cars.

We currently have 100 oyster farmers who happily pay $250 to grow oysters while they are improving the water quality on Three Mile Harbor. Mr. Dunn has provided relevant education to many of the local schools. The residents of the Springs should be grateful that they have been identified by the state and federal water quality improvement as probable grant recipients, which would fund the project.

The boats moored at Three Mile Harbor marina contribute an oily film to the nearby water. I would think that Mark Mendelman would be a champion of water quality improvement in his backyard. At a time when our marine environment is under siege, I applaud the Town Board for acting urgently to approve this environmental project.
