Thomas Murphy
Thomas Murphy of Montauk died at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on Friday, October 21. He was 63.
Born on January 5, 1948, to Charles and Eileen Murphy (née Nolan) in Brooklyn, he graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School and attended St. John’s University in Queens. In May 1966, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in May 1970. He rose to the rank of sergeant, serving in Guam maintaining B-52s and worked on Loran Systems and Norad Bomb Sites.
Mr. Murphy worked for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, retiring in 2003 as a foreman. He moved to live full time in Montauk eight years ago.
In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking, photography and fishing. Before he moved to Montauk, he was a member of the Varuna Boat Club in Brooklyn where he held positions such as fleet captain, captain and president and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn.
He is survived by his siblings, Daniel Murphy of Montauk, Barbara Kieffer of West Islip, Kathleen DeAngelo of Oceanside, Virginia Baird of Albany, Maureen Schnibbe of New Jersey; eight nieces and nephews; five great-nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.
Visitation took place on Sunday, October 30, at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 31, at St. Therese of Lisieux in Montauk. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
