The State Assembly has passed a bill to grant official emergency rescue and first aid status to the East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue and Auxiliary Squad. The designation would allow volunteers to attach green lights to their vehicles, and those of their family members or businesses, to help them respond expeditiously to emergencies on the beaches and during floods. The squad has been responding to water emergencies 24/7 since 2003, making rescues year-round at all unprotected beaches in East Hampton Town. U.S. Coast Guard officers evacuated a 50-year-old man from a fishing boat near Montauk Point on Sunday afternoon due to a health emergency. He died later that evening. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center were notified at 4:10 p.m. that a crew member aboard the fishing vessel Blackhawk was having chest pains and going in and out of consciousness, according to a press release from the Coast Guard.
