William Issaiah Hartwell Sr., a 52-year resident of East Hampton, died on November 14 at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton. He was 86.
Born April 14, 1923, in McKinney, Virginia, to Robert and Lottie (née Mason) Hartwell, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. A member of American Legion Post 419, he worked as a professional dog groomer.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharlene Hartwell of East Hampton and New York City, and Gloria Hartwell of Maryland; a son, William I. Hartwell Jr. of Maryland; four sisters, Lucy West, Helen Hays and Bertha Hopson, all of East Hampton, and Marie Gainer of New Jersey; eight grandchildren, Adrienne Hartwell, Carla Taylor, Antonio Taylor, Anthony Hartwell, Damien Hartwell-Graham, William I. Hartwell III, Robert W. Hartwell and Kiara Hartwell; six great-grandchildren, Derrick Hartwell, Kyron Stewart, Raspberry Simpson, Allicea Hartwell, Dominique Hartwell-Graham and Shawn Hartwell-Graham; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys B. (née Bradley) Hartwell, in 1979; and a son, Ronald Hartwell, in 1984. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Stella, Thelma and Ruth and two brothers, Lee and Robert Lee.
The family received visitors on November 20 at the Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A funeral service was held on November 21 at Calvary Baptist Church in East Hampton; interment followed at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
