A Springs man died on Friday afternoon, January 24, after falling off scaffolding at a house under construction on Glenmore Avenue in Montauk.
Manuel Segarra-Aguirre, 41, was one of three people working to build a new house at 57 Glenmore Avenue when he fell off scaffolding erected around the outside of the structure and onto concrete below.
Neither of the other men who were working on the house witnessed the fall or could discern what caused Mr. Segarra-Aguirre to tumble from nearly 30-foot-high scaffolding, according to East Hampton Town Police Captain Chris Anderson. The other workers, whom police have not identified, said Mr. Segarra-Aguirre made no cry for help before the fall, Captain Anderson added. They called for an ambulance just after 3:30 p.m., and the Montauk Fire Department responded.
Officials from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office, were at the site on Friday night. Town Police and OSHA personnel both said they could say little about the incident. One of the OSHA investigators said on Monday that their report on the incident could take as long as six months to complete.
Workers were in the process of shingling the modular home, which is being constructed by PK Homes of Montauk. A call to the company on Monday was not returned.
The Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton is handling the funeral arrangements for Mr. Segarra-Aguirre. Services had not yet been scheduled at press time on Tuesday.
