West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquito Samples on South Fork; Department of Health Urges Caution Against Mosquito Bites

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said that it has identified the presence of West Nile virus in two mosquito samples collected recently in Bridgehampton. The samples are the first on the South Fork in which the virus was detected this year. West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Seniors and individuals with compromised immune systems are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
