Larry Rivers—painter, sculptor, poet and musician—defied categorization but was nevertheless an established and very successful artist of the late 20th century. He was recognized for his large paintings that merged abstraction with images—often with irony--and was known nearly as well for his lively, unconventional lifestyle. He maintained residences/studios in New York and Southampton, where he cut a colorful figure dressed as a hipster and zooming through town on his motorcycle.
