ALL THE THINGS, CURATED BY ERIKA RANEE Visual Thinking Strategies Talk

Description:

Visual Thinking Strategies Talk: Sunday July 21, 4 pm
Visual Thinking Strategies is an inquiry-based teaching method that has changed museum education worldwide. It is an opportunity to come together as a community, to practice looking, talking, listening, and engaging with art and each other.

The Arts Center at Duck Creek is thrilled to announce an upcoming group exhibition curated by artist Erika Ranee, who’s solo exhibition will take place simultaneously in the Little Gallery. These shows will open on Saturday, July 13 and remain on view through Sunday, August 11, 2024. A reception will be held on Saturday, July 13, from 5-7 pm.

This group show is organized by esteemed artist, curator, and NYU professor Erika Ranee in the John Little Barn, juxtaposed with a solo exhibition of Ranee’s small paintings in the Little Gallery.

The show will feature 6 artists who defy the conventions of traditional painting. They adeptly blur the boundaries between "support" and "surface," employing techniques such as manipulating stretcher bars, cutting canvas, and integrating diverse materials to construct their artworks rather than solely relying on paint. Drawing inspiration from elements of drawing, collage, and sculpture, these artists not only push the limits of painting but redefine its language. Featured artists are Mike Cloud, Daniel John Gadd, Carl E. Hazlewood, Leeza Meksin, Jeanne Reynal and Rachel Eulena Williams.

Ranee will present a solo exhibition of her own works at the Little Gallery, drawing intriguing parallels between her role as a curator and her artistic practice. As an organization, Duck Creek encourages our viewers to rethink their relationship with art. As an artist, experienced studio art professor, and curator, Ranee embodies generosity towards her fellow artists and a genuine interest in their work. She fosters inclusive dialogue and encourages thoughtful participation in artistic discourse. We hope this project will offer our viewers a fresh opportunity to explore less conventional art practices, both in the studio and in the roles we all play, as artists, curators and audiences.

Erika Ranee holds an MFA in painting from UC Berkeley and has exhibited extensively in New York, including at prestigious venues such as the Bronx Museum, The Last Brucennial, The Parlour Bushwick, and others. Her solo and group exhibitions showcase her talent and commitment to the arts.
