Art Exhibit Opening Meet the Artist: Harriet Finck

Description:

Artist: Harriet Finck
Born and raised in Brooklyn.
Finck was trained as an architect at Harvard, and worked for IM Pei and Partners, and then for herself.
In midlife, she turned to art making, first by cutting up her own prints and refashioning them into collage.
The abstract expressionists attracted me, particularly the work of Lee Krasner.
At the present, Finck is occupied with landscape painters: George Inness, Charles Burtchfield, Monet.
Finck progressed from collage to painting, and began working at a larger scale, still working with acrylic and paper.
My work now consists of painted on paper collage, with various themes: nature, quilts, geometric relationships.
Painting and drawing on paper, large pieces. The themes are repetitive natural patterns. I begin to explore my
relationship to various Hebrew texts, with an interest in writing as drawing.
She often works with mixed media such as foil scrolls and found object assemblages, and periodically turns to ancient
Hebrew text as a motif, sometimes incorporating the words themselves, mining her intensive education in classical
Jewish narratives for meaning.
Harriet Finck is a full-time artist, an adjunct professor of art, and an art center instructor.
Finck's current work includes a diptych titled “Above and Beyond”, several pieces from the phrase from Psalms, "From the
Depths", and paintings based on a Friday night Psalm, called River/Mountain/Sea.
Finck’s work is in corporate collections and her studio is in Manufacturers Village, East Orange, New Jersey.
