Artists Talk: Bastienne Schmidt and Philippe Cheng at The Leiber Collection
Sunday, July 13 at 4 pm
East Hampton, NY – The Leiber Collection is delighted to host distinguished artists Bastienne Schmidt and Philippe Cheng for an intimate Artist Talk on Sunday, July 13 at 4:00 PM, as part of the ongoing Garden of Friends exhibition series. This special event will offer a rare glimpse into the evolving practices of these two acclaimed artists, both of whom have been integral to the Garden of Friends since its inception six years ago.
Schmidt and Cheng will discuss the development of their work over the past several years, sharing insights into their creative processes, inspirations, and the powerful role of place and light in their art. Their presence and ongoing contributions have helped shape the garden’s vibrant, contemplative spirit, and their talks promise to be as illuminating as their artwork.
The Garden of Friends is an outdoor exhibition created in homage to Judith and Gerson Leiber, whose legacy of artistry and friendship lives on through The Leiber Collection and its celebrated sculpture garden. The Garden of Friends honors the Leibers’ enduring commitment to the arts and offers a meaningful way for our community to stay connected through creativity.
About the Artists:
Bastienne Schmidt is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Bridgehampton. Raised in Germany, Greece, and Italy, her work explores themes of place through both topographical and metaphorical lenses. Her art is included in prestigious collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the International Center of Photography, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. At The Leiber Collection, Schmidt has engaged deeply with the surrounding landscape, creating work inspired by the garden and her ongoing fascination with the grid as a visual and conceptual framework.
Philippe Cheng, also based in Bridgehampton, is a fine artist known for his poetic exploration of light. Educated at The School of Visual Arts and New York University, Cheng’s project “All the Light You Cannot See” features several site-specific installations within the sculpture garden. Using humble materials like reflective aluminum flashing, he draws attention to overlooked places where light unexpectedly reveals itself. His work at The Leiber Collection continues to evolve as part of his broader investigation into light, presence, and materiality.
