Jon Michaud’s Last Call at Coogan’s: The Life and Death of a Neighborhood Bar tells the story of an Irish saloon in Northern Manhattan that opened in 1985 in the midst of the crack epidemic and closed during the COVID spring of 2020. During its three decades in business Coogan’s became the essential gathering space for this complex neighborhood, turning itself into a theater, a music venue, an art gallery, and a welcoming haven from the demands of life in the city. Writer and librarian Jon Michaud, in conversation with Water Mill resident Peter Walsh, an owner of Coogan’s, will discuss Coogan’s history and how now, more than ever, we need places like bars and libraries where we can get together with other members of the communities where we live.
