CHARNECO / VIGNOLI: VISIBLE LANGUAGE

Description:

OSCAR MOLINA GALLERY IS PLEASED TO PRESENT CHARNECO / VIGNOLI: VISIBLE LANGUAGE, featuring mixed media works by Darlene Charneco and photographs by Alex Vignoli. Opening with a Reception from 5-8pm on Friday, September 9th, 2022, the show will be on view through October 3rd, 2022.

From early in her career, Darlene Charneco developed her own ritual process and tactile language. The artist creates what she calls “Touchmaps” or “tactile pages”: three-dimensional, mixed media works that serve, “to orient, sense, and express within a world that is rapidly being reconfigured by the evolution of communication networks”. The show will include a hammered nail piece from 2004, the 60 x 60-inch Emerging Architecture, alongside selections from two ongoing series of works titled Prayers and Perceptions. All the artworks demonstrate the consistent thread in Charneco’s work that relates to language, systems of communication, all structures that are historic and ever evolving.

Alex Vignoli’s Livros (Books) and the related series Too Many Stories transmit the fundamental way in which humanity has told stories since antiquity. Vignoli aims to tell “visual stories” in limited-edition prints that feature books and periodicals as their subject matter. Exploring the sculptural qualities of these objects, the artist creates three-dimensional compositions which he captures photographically. He rolls and folds the books to, “make more graphic images from these pages…[allowing] their stories to unfold while reading (looking).” The ongoing Livros series is limited purely to the physical manipulation of the books, while in Too Many Stories, begun in 2016, Vignoli adds digital manipulation to further the interpretation of how we see and hear stories; how we acquire knowledge, and how, “knowledge moved the world to the digital era”.

Oscar Molina Gallery showcases emerging and mid-career, local and international artists.
