Chroma-Tenacity

Description:

Chroma-Tenacity is a two-person exhibition featuring the work of artists Gina Mars and Ellen Hallie Schiff.

The artists define Chroma-Tenacity as the process of tenacious, or controlled, mastery of their mediums, allowing for chance reactions to take place both chemically and chromatically.

Ellen Hallie Schiff’s abstract paintings emerge from an intimate relationship with the surface where layers of paint are applied and removed. She sculpts texture and scrapes it away in a way that, for the artist, conveys emotion.

A potter working in raku, Gina Mars harnesses the unique properties of each glaze, and their distinct reactions, with her stunning, textured vessels. Despite their exposure to intense heat and erosion, her works retain an earthen quality. Through the raku process, each vessel retains a persistent, radiant, deep color.

The exhibition, Chroma-Tenacity, is the first to feature the work of these two artists together, and will include medium and large oil paintings by Schiff, as well as decorative and functional pottery by Mars.

Gina Mars has been a potter and sculptor based in Huntington for three decades. Known worldwide for her raku style and her exquisite glazes fired in her immense, gas kiln, she also teaches classes at her newly formed school, The Spirit of Huntington Center, an arts school for people with special needs.

A resident of Glen Cove, Ellen Hallie Schiff has exhibited her award-winning oil paintings in numerous regional exhibitions. Her work is also included in many public and private collections.
