On Thursday, Jan 16, 6:30pm at PEER's monthly meeting, the film 'Conscience Point' will be screened, followed by a discussion with members of the Shinnecock Nation. The documentary by Treva Wurmfeld chronicles the struggle of the Shinnecock Nation to preserve their land and sacred burial sites, as the real estate industry takes over "The Hamptons.". Longtime Shinnecock activist Becky Genia is highlighted in the film and will participate in the post-film discussion.
The film was shown at the Hamptons International Film festival and on National Public TV. CONSCIENCE POINT takes a ground-level approach to documenting the almost two-decade-long battle for preservation that has come to encompass not only questions of land ownership, but the morality of land use policy and income inequality within one of America’s wealthiest zip codes.
Conscience Point was directed by Treva Wurmfeld and produced along with members of the Shinnecock Nation,
