Exploring East Hampton strong ties to Black chattel slavery

Description:

Tune in to WLIW Heart of the East End, 83.3 FM, where Gianna Volpe will host Dr. Carol Adrianne Smith and her friends from Freetown, East Hampton. They will discuss Dr. Smith's upcoming recital (https://scc-arts.org/soprano-carol-smith-and-pianist-jonathan-howe/) and how it will connect to her birthplace, the historic Freetown of East Hampton.

Join them as they explore the inspiring history of the formerly enslaved and Indigenous Montauketts, along with the Caucasians who supported them, sharing a few stories of resilience and triumph.
The conversation will also focus on one of the first Settlement Houses in the United States, known today as the Neighborhood House, located in East Hampton, Freetown. This remarkable historical institution, still standing in Freetown, empowered the enslaved by providing access to learning how to read and medical care —a crucial resource for their survival.
