In Process @ The Watermill Center is our ongoing series of open rehearsals, workshops, artist talks and studio visits that invite the community to engage with the work of our international Artists-in-Residence.rnrnThe Watermill Center invites audiences of all ages and backgrounds to gain unique insight into the creative process of artists, cultivating an understanding of how artists from across the globe develop new work.rnrnIn Process allows direct engagement between the community and our Artists-in-Residence in the midst of their residency, giving them the opportunity to present and receive feedback on their work, and continue the development process throughout the remainder of their stay.rnrnrnABOUT THE ARTISTSrnrnEmily Furr is a New York based painter whose work references the feminine archetype, which she seeks to restore by working against the current phallocentric age and issuing in a new yonic era. If a phallic signifier points to action, explosion, and fortitude, a yonic signifier points to the subconscious, the sublime, and the cosmic void. A phallus points outward, a yonis inward. If the phallic is physical, the yonic is celestial. Through the small window of her work, Furr disassembles symbols from patriarchal systems to show the female aspect breaking through.rnrnBessie Award-winning, Gender nonconforming/trans interdisciplinary artist and writer, Ni’Ja Whitson has been referred to as “majestic” and “magnetic” by The New York Times and is recognized by Brooklyn Magazine as a culture influencer. Whitson is a 2018 MAP Fund recipient, the featured choreographer of the 2018 CCA Biennial, and 2018-2019 UBW Choreographic Center Fellow Candidate. Other recent awards include a Camargo/Jerome Foundation Fellowship, Dance in Process (DiP) Residency, Hedgebrook Fellowship, LMCC Process Space Residency, Bogliasco Fellowship, Brooklyn Arts Exchange Artist Residency, two time Creative Capital “On Our Radar” award including being in its inaugural group, among dozens of other residencies and awards across disciplines.rnrnSasha Wortzel is a New York-based artist and filmmaker originally from Florida. Blending documentary techniques and fictional narratives, her work in film/video, installation, and performance explores how structures of power shape our lives around race, gender, sexuality, and place. Wortzel’s work has been presented internationally at New Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Kitchen, ICA London, BAMcinématek, Berlinale, DOC NYC, Outfest, UnionDocs, Tribeca Interactive, Leslie Lohman Museum, and A.I.R. Gallery. Her work has been supported by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Art Matters, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace program, Queer/Art/Mentorship, the Astraea Foundation’s Global Arts Fund and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Wortzel was awarded a 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in film/video and is a 2018-2019 participant in Abrons Arts Center’s AIRspace Residency for Visual Artists. Wortzel has been featured by the New York Times, New York Magazine, Artforum, Art in America, and The Nation. She received an MFA in Integrated Media Arts from Hunter College.rnrnWatermill’s mission is to provide artists and thinkers the opportunity to focus on the development of their work and practice. Artists-in-Residence have gone on to perform at venues and festivals including the New Museum, Roulette, PS122, American Realness, Clocktower Gallery, Performa, Vienna’s Donaufestival, Kampnagel in Hamburg, CPR – Center for Performance Research, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center.rnrn
