In conjunction with our Spring exhibition, Return to A Place By the Sea, that features works by Nanette Carter, Gregory Coates, Al Loving, and Frank Wimberley, The Church welcomes artist Gregory Coates as February's featured artist for our Insight Sunday series. Coates has four works dating from 1998-2019 included in the exhibition, which will be on view from February 5th through May 21st. The show revisits and recontextualizes the 1999 exhibition, A Place By the Sea, highlighting the works and friendship between the four artists. One of Coates's works, Shiroco, was part of the original 1999 show. Coates's other works demonstrate his continuing interest in experimenting and presentation.
Insight Sundays provide an in-depth look at the process, techniques, and concepts of art straight from the maker's point of view. Insight Sundays are held on the last Sunday of each month and are free to members. For the past few decades, Gregory Coates has worked almost exclusively with found materials, and his studio practice has drawn increasingly to techniques associated with sculpture, collage, and installation. Coates is a consummate innovator investigating how simple forms and materials can embody and elicit an empathetic response from viewers. Coates considers his creations "social abstractions," deeply personal works informed by the artist's lived experiences, memories, or familial encounters but comment on broader political or cultural issues.
