Hayground School, in partnership with the Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center, is proud to present a free screening of the film Just Mercy at the Regal UA East Hampton Cinema on Sunday, January 18 at 1pm. ( Doors Open at 12:45)The film will be followed by a brief panel discussion.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Just Mercy is based on the memoir of the same name that tells the powerful and thought-provoking true story of young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice. Starring Michael B. Jordan as Stevenson, Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian and Brie Larson as Eva Ansley, the film follows the characters as they become embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.
Just Mercy embodies the filmmakers’ mission of forgiveness and redemption for people who have been incarcerated, and demands a fair legal system, free of extreme sentences. Further, it underscores that one of our basic American rights–the right to meaningful counsel–is still dependent on access, all too often determined by who you are and where you live.
This free event has been made possible through the support and generosity of One Community, Represent Justice, and UA Regal Cinemas.
An independent social impact and film production company, One Community facilitates and oversees the implementation of funded social impact campaigns that support, and are supported by, the feature-film and television programming it co-finances.
Through stories of hope and redemption, Represent Justice spurs public demand for a fair legal system and dignity for individuals directly impacted by it—disproportionately people of color and the poor. Represent Justice is made up of a community of bi-partisan partners, advocates, artists, athletes and more who have come together to create this campaign to change the narrative around and advance justice reform.
The timely showing of Just Mercy over Martin Luther King weekend inaugurates the event partnership between Hayground School and the Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center, and highlights their shared commitment to community conversation, connection, and outreach.
Lukas Weinstein, Director, Strategy and Partnerships, Hayground School:
“This collaborative effort to open doors of dialogue within the community on issues that affect us all exemplifies Hayground's focus as an educational organization and aligns with our school, camp and community vision. Hayground could never achieve all that we do without our partners, so it's truly an honor to work alongside BHCCRC to create such a meaningful community event.”
Bonnie Michelle Cannon, Executive Director BHCCRC:
“We are so proud to partner with the Hayground to present this important film, JUST MERCY, to our community. It is a perfect extension to The Center’s THINKING FORWARD LECTURE SERIES, Equality Matters in the Hamptons.
A series to educate and to open our minds and hearts.”

Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center
Born out of tragedy in 1949, when a fire killed two children in a local migrant camp, out of the ashes rose the Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center. The Center continues to serve the community’s children with educational and enrichment programs. For many working families, The Center is a lifeline. Their kids flourish in our many programs and play safely on the six-acre farm and fields donated to create The Center in the 1950’s.
