Capriccio Radio, a new play about the role of classical music in the modern world, will perform for three nights at the BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst: Friday, April 28th through Sunday, April 30th, 2023.
Written by Larry Rinkel and directed by Tony Tambasco, Capriccio Radio challenges the role of classical music, and the classics generally, and the ways that “high art” is often sheltered from popular tastes. Set at a classical radio station under pressure to survive in a culture where such music has become increasingly marginalized, the announcers of the station struggle to answer questions of their relevance under a new corporate director, who insists on putting profits before the music they love.
“The classics are currently undergoing a painful reckoning in light of the way they have been leveraged as agents of white supremacy and northwest European ethnocentrism, and those of us who love them are finding that we have to better articulate what it is we love about them,” Tambasco said. “Larry’s play speaks to the heart of the issues that we are confronting as we attempt to build new futures for the classics.
Rinkel has had work produced across the United States. Two monologues from Capriccio Radio were published in Smith & Kraus's Best Men's Monologues for 2022. Most recently, Larry's A Semicolon is a Double won first place at the Secret Theatre's One-Act Festival, summer 2022.
Capriccio Radio will be presented on Friday, April 28th, 2023 and Saturday, April 29th, 2023 at 8 PM, and Sunday, April 30th, 2023 at 2 PM at the BACCA Arts Center at 149 N Wellwood Ave, Lindenhurst, NY 11757.
