LongHouse’s annual landscape lecture event brings together scholars for a day of talks, garden walks, and shared meals in the estate’s modernist setting. Modernist Landscapes: Visionaries and Their Gardens explores the ways modernist architects and designers envisioned gardens as extensions of their work, with presentations followed by informal conversation and lunch in the garden.
Barry Bergdoll, Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University, will examine the gardens in the work of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier; William Whitaker, Curator and Collections Manager of the Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design, will speak on the career and collaborations of landscape designer Harriet Pattison; and Caleb Smith, Professor of English and American Studies at Yale University, will consider Russell Page’s blend of classical tradition and modernist innovation in his garden designs.
