New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC)– Cold Stun Sea Turtle Lecture (Level 1) and Field Training (Level 2)

Description:

1PM – Level 1

2:30PM – Level 2

New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC)– Cold Stun Sea Turtle Lecture (Level 1) and Field Training (Level 2): Level 1 is for all ages. Level 2 – call SOFO for ages

Program Presenter: Representative from New York Marine Rescue Center

Cold stunning is a condition similar to hypothermia that is brought on when these cold-blooded sea turtles are exposed to water temperatures below 50ºF. Sea turtles inhabit New York waters during the Summer and Fall months before migrating south following warmer waters. Since cold stunning slows the movements of afflicted sea turtles, it causes the animals to become listless and are washed ashore with strong prevailing winds throughout New York beaches. Cold stunning is the number one cause of sea turtle fatality in New York. Therefore, NYMRC needs your help! The sooner these animals are found and reported to the NYMRC, the higher their chance for survival! Join our network of volunteers and come to our Level 1 and Level 2 training sessions.

Level 1: 1PM – All ages

An hour-long lecture that will discuss the sea turtle species that utilize New York waters, what to do if you find a cold stunned sea turtle and how you can help these critical species. This will give you the knowledge and tools to walk the beach and search for turtles during the stranding season.

Level 2: 2:30PM

For this program, call LeighAnn at SOFO (631) 537-9735 for ages

Field training will give you a more in-depth hands-on training regarding sea turtle response and rescue. This training will occur at a nearby beach (location TBD) and will last one hour. Attendees will learn where to look for stranded sea turtles, how to collect and record important data as well as background information on supportive care and transportation of critical sea turtle patients. Completion of this course will qualify you to be part of a larger response team for cold stun sea turtles at the NYMR
