This year, our Philosophy discussion group will read and discuss Spinoza's "Ethics" and an assortment of works by Nietzsche, including "The Birth of Tragedy," "Thus Spake Zarathustra" and "Beyond Good and Evil." While elaborating the metaphysics--or anti-metaphysics-- of each philosopher, we will be especially interested in how each defines and utilizes the notion of "power," both personal and political. This will enable us to develop a critique of contemporary culture through the eyes of two of the world's greatest philosophers.
