The Texas Gulf coast is home to seven major estuarine systems across almost 400 mi of coastline. A distinctive feature of the Texas coast is the gradient of decreasing rainfall and freshwater inflow moving from the northeast border with Louisiana to the southwest border with Mexico. The resulting low, moderate, and high salinity estuaries host a broad range of ecologically diverse organisms. I will focus on two key habitats: first, eastern oyster reefs that are conspicuous features in moderate salinity areas along the mid-coast, and second, Serpulid worm reefs that inhabit predominantly hypersaline areas along the lower coast. Both habitats provide valuable ecosystem functions, yet have experienced historic losses in distribution and extent. I will discuss ongoing research activities that focus on providing science-based information to guide conservation, restoration and resource management decisions.
