Bill Paley, who created what became CBS, was one of the towering figures in the history of broadcasting. He personified the glamor and influence of his communications empire. The son of immigrants, he rose to make millions and live large among the glitterati of New York City. During his marriage to the socialite and fashion icon Barbara “Babe” Paley, the couple’s glamorous social life kept society columnists busy. In 1978 Paley bought “Four Fountains,” the unique architectural example of American Art Deco design on Halsey Neck Lane, and gave Southampton a taste of his charm and powerful aura.
