The 1950s and 1960s were the era of the “Nashville Sound,” a sleek, pop-oriented brand of country music that featured lush string arrangements, sweet vocal backing and lead singers in garish, rhinestone-studded outfits. In 1960s California, however, a reaction to the Nashville Sound arose, known as “the Bakersfield Sound” and featuring small, electric-guitar-based bands, a driving beat and a preference for gritty subject matter focused on troubled relationships, hard work and rugged independence.
Now Tennessee Walt offers From Bakersfield with Love, an all-new concert of songs by iconic stars Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, as well as lesser-known artists such as Tommy Collins, Susan Raye, Jean Shepard, Red Simpson and Wynn Stewart, the man who pioneered the Bakersfield Sound, while looking at its roots, the behind-the-scenes story of its success and its enduring influence on today’s country.
