Description:

Jo inartist Oluwaseyi (Shayee) Awoyomi as she dialogs and shares the centuries old history related to her installation Iya Alaro, translated as “Mother of Dyers” and the language of dyed textile.

The indigo dyed textile is known in Yorubaland as Adire which translates as (adi) “to tie” and (re) “to dye.” This talk examines the role of the language of dyed textile through signs and symbols, the significance of the businesswomen in the Yoruba community, sustainability, and the journey of indigo.

This program was made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
