Artists have been incorporating word play into their art throughout the last century, beginning with early cubist collage and dadaism and on through pop art and conceptual art, continuing into contemporary art today. Whether via found object, social or political commentary, enigmatically, with humor, or as narrative, artists have used text to communicate their ideas and enhance their work in a myriad of ways. Curated by Arlene Bujese, THIS LAND IS..... takes its theme from the Woody Guthrie song This Land Is Your Land. Each artist presents a theme based on experience, perception, or interpretation of what the 'Land', namely the USA, evokes for a particular work of art at a particular time in the American journey.
