In the hands-on workshop “How to Trap a Demon” led by Watermill Alum Tamar Ettun, participants will work with Lilit the Empathic Demon to identify, draw and trap a demon from their lives using home supplies.
Lilith comes from a healing tradition in Jewish communities of the ancient Middle East. An artist-magician would draw a person’s demon onto an incantation bowl, write a spell, overturn the bowl, and trap the demon to remove her powers.
Participants will first be guided in identifying and naming their own personal “demons”, followed by instruction in creating a home-made incantation bowl to trap and exorcise them. We will conclude with a communal ritual to release the demons from our bowls, and our lives.
This workshop is open to all ages 8+, regardless of experience or skill level. Due to COVID-19, this workshop will take place online. All registered attendees will receive an email with a Zoom link the morning of the event.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Tamar Ettun is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She has had exhibitions and performances at Pioneer Works, PERFORMA, Sculpture Center, Madison Square Park, Art Omi Sculpture Garden, The Barrick Museum UNLV, e-flux, Herzelia Biennial, Socrates Sculpture Park, Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, Fridman Gallery, among others. She received awards and fellowships from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, Chinati Foundation, Moca Tucson Artist Residency, MacDowell Fellowship, RECESS, Art Production Fund, and Iaspis.
Ettun received her MFA from Yale University in 2010. She teaches at Columbia University School of Arts, Lehman College, and The New School Parsons School of Design. Tamar was a 2015 Artist-in-Residence at The Watermill Center.
