Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery

The Rev. Holly Haile Thompson, DD, will speak on the issues emanating from the Doctrine of Discovery, a15th century European policy that gave “discoverers” the right to claim and conquer non-Christian lands to “save the souls” of indigenous non-Christian peoples, and the consequent displacement and erasure of native cultures that is still felt today. In 2012, at our General Assembly, the Unitarian Universalist Association adopted a resolution repudiating the Doctrine of Discovery.
