Lament from Nicaea
Our service will explore the rich variety of ideas that swirled around within early Christianity but were suppressed as a result of a conference of 300 bishops called by the Roman emperor Constantine in the year 325. He thought that getting them all to sing the same tune would strengthen the empire. The result was the creed that most Christians ascribe to today. They might be surprised to learn that this creed was settled as a result of imperial politics.
