The Burden of Ego

The human ego evolved as adaptations generally do, because when we are young it promotes individual survival and success with the opposite sex, and hence reproduction. Once our reproductive years are over, the ego becomes more and more of a burden and less and less of an advantage, until at some point in our lives it is more trouble than it’s worth. John will use poetry and story to illustrate an insight that came to him a year ago, which you may find useful in your own spiritual life.

Speaker: John Andrews
Musician: Jim Turner

Speaker Bio: During most of his working life John was engaged in research on energy efficient buildings at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He joined our congregation in 2006, shortly after retiring. He has served in various posts, including as our president from 2010 to 2013. He is also co-leader, along with Diana Lindley, of the Long Island East chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby.
