Humanity's Faustian Bargain

Ever since the Industrial Revolution we have made a Faustian bargain with nature, our prosperity depending on ever-advancing technology and ever-increasing material production. In Goethe’s version of the story, Faust escapes damnation. Can we do the same? I will try to show that, yes we can. Will we? That remains to be seen.
