Barbecue and finance are an unusual combination to most. Michael Loeb may be a successful private equity investor by day, but by night he serves up some of the most delicious ribs that give even the most acclaimed chefs a run for their money.
This summer, Mr. Loeb is putting his skills on the grill to the test in a “rib-off,” in which he and celebrity chefs will compete to craft the most outstanding barbecue dish to benefit Pop.Earth.
Pop.Earth, short for Population Earth, was the first organization in the country to offer low-cost holistic healthcare to those with autism and developmental disorders. The nonprofit, which operates under the mission that no one is turned away based on the inability to pay, provides classes in yoga, reiki, massage, art, music, dance, fitness, advocacy and healthy cooking to individuals of all ages.
This year’s Pop.Earth fundraiser is the “Ribs for Kids” Chefs Care Barbeque hosted by Mr. Loeb and Salido, the New York City-based tech company known for its restaurant operating system, at Mr. Loeb’s Southampton beachfront estate that was featured in the Showtime series “Billions.” Guests can enjoy specialty cocktails while partaking in a one-of-a-kind auction, listen to music by Los Angeles’s DJ Politik, and, of course, sample outstanding barbecue dishes from more than 20 celebrity chefs in the “rib-off” hosted by chef Jonathan Waxman.
Participating chefs include Alex Guarnaschelli, Franklin Becker, Floyd Cardoz, Marco Canora, Maria Loi and Ralph Scamardella.
“While many people know of Michael Loeb’s business success, philanthropy, and beautiful homes, not many are privy to the fact he is also an excellent chef,” said Salido founder and CEO Shu Chowdhury. “This event was inspired by Michael's unbelievably delicious ribs and the fact that they could stack up against any acclaimed chef. We're gathering New York’s best chefs at Michael’s beautiful Hamptons beachside estate to offer guests amazing BBQ, including his superb ribs, while raising awareness and funds for children’s charities.”
“Ribs for Kids” Chefs Care Barbeque benefiting Pop.Earth will take place Saturday, July 15, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Michael Loeb’s home on 1610 Meadow Lane in Southampton. Registration is required. Individual tickets are $400 in advance or $500 at the door. Ambassador for Autism tickets are $1,000, which include an individual ticket and name recognition. Luxury tickets are $5,000, and include two individual tickets, name recognition, and a table for 10 at the Pop.Earth annual Autism COOKS Celebrity Chef Gala in the Fall.
