Though it might seem like the East End has incurred a population explosion in the last few years, the numbers are in, and they haven’t yet reflected a housing boom. According to information published by the United States Census Bureau in May, population estimates across East End villages have barely budged from 2010 to 2012.
Sag Harbor Village, which splits real estate between Southampton and East Hampton towns, showed the only noticeable bump. As of July 1, 2012, the estimated population was 2,251—a 3.2-percent increase from 2011, an estimated 2,181 people, and a 3.7-percent increase from 2010, which reported 2,171 people.
Only because of its modest population, West Hampton Dunes also saw a noticeable increase from 2010 to 2012, illustrating that one person can indeed make a difference. The 2012 estimate of 57 residents is a 1.8-percent increase from 2011’s report of 56 people, and a 3.6-percent change from 2010’s 55 residents. In Westhampton Beach, populations in 2011 and 2012 remained constant at 1,730, a .4-percent increase from 2010’s report of 1,723 people. Quogue reported similarly low percent changes: a .1-percent increase from 974 residents in 2011 to 975 people in 2012, and a .6-percent increase from 2010’s 969 residents.
Southampton Village’s population estimate marks a .3-percent increase from 3,139 people in 2011 to 3,149 in 2012, and a .5-percent increase from 2010’s report of 3,113 residents. Sagaponack’s Census numbers showed 318 residents in 2012, a .6-percent increase from 316 people in 2011 and 314 residents in 2010. North Haven saw a .4-percent increase between 2011 and 2012—847 residents to 850—and a 1.7-percent increase from 2010’s 836 reported residents.
In East Hampton, the town’s sole village has a population estimate of 1,099 residents for 2012—a .3-percent increase from 1,096 people in 2011 and 1,084 residents in 2010.
Hamlets, including Hampton Bays and Amagansett, were not included in the United States Census Bureau reporting. For additional Census information, contact the Public Information Office at pio@census.gov.
