The East Hampton Historical Society’s annual Summer Lecture Luncheon returns to the Maidstone Club on Thursday, August 11, for a discussion with landscape architect Thomas L. Woltz.

Woltz leads a practice of historians, scientists, artists and landscape architects at Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, a firm with offices in New York, Charlottesville and Houston. The team uses research-based design to reveal forgotten histories in the land, according to the historical society, which stated that the firm’s body of work spans continents and countries, telling lost, forgotten and hidden narratives embedded in landscapes ranging from dense urban sites to remote wilderness.

The lecture is titled “Dynamic Preservation Through Landscape Design.” Through case studies that include Frederic Edwin Church’s Olana in Hudson, The Gardens at the Jay Heritage Center in Rye, Sylvester Manor Educational Farm on Shelter Island and the EcoCommons at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Woltz will illustrate the research-based design process that balances sensitive adaptations and contemporary interventions to breathe new life into historic and cultural landscapes.

Marc Porter, the chairman of Christie’s Americas, will moderate an audience Q&A.

Proceeds from the program will benefit the historical society’s partnerships with local schools as well as the preservation of its artifact collection.
