The National Association of Home Builders recently named John Barrows of Wainscott-based J. Barrows, Inc., as its “Green Building Individual Advocate of the Year.” Last month, the association honored him at the 12th annual “NAHB National Green Building Conference” in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Mr. Barrows is the president of J. Barrows, a company that has provided general contracting, construction management and construction consultation services for more than 30 years on the East End. As the “Green Building Advocate of the Year,” he has been recognized for his efforts to seek to include many sustainable and energy efficient practices in each custom residential project he undertakes.

Mr. Barrows is also the co-founding partner of Wainscott-based Performance Path Solutions, LLC, a company that provides consultation services, educational programs and verifications for energy efficiency and green building. He also holds the NAHB Graduate Master Builder and Certified Green Professional designations.

Additionally, Mr. Barrows is a nationally recognized author and speaker who provides education to building professionals in energy efficiency, green building practices, and project management. He has written several training courses for NAHB, and is also the co-author of the “Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Building and Remodeling.”

During the last four years, Mr. Barrows has trained hundreds of builders and remodelers in the “Certified Green Professional” program and trained verifiers for the “National Green Building Standard.” He has held positions on the Board of Directors of the NAHB University of Housing, the Executive Board of the New York State Builders Association Research and Education Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Long Island Builders Institute, and is currently Chairman of the Long Island Green Homes Council.

“This award is especially rewarding,” said Mr. Barrows recently. “As the green building movement gathers momentum, to be recognized as an advocate for the movement by NAHB is truly an honor. I feel that it validates the fact there is a better way to build that can have a positive, long-lasting effect on our communities and be cost effective at the same time.”
