PSEG Long Island is sharing tips to stay warm this winter while reducing energy use and saving money.
The utility recommends installing a programmable thermostat to automatically manage a home’s heating needs. Energy Star estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save the average American household about $180 a year — and PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats.
Installing a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) will lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months, according to PSEG Long Island, which provides rebates through its Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Plus program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet income qualifications.
Replacing inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LEDs will result in using 90 percent less energy on lighting, which typically accounts for 15 percent of the electricity used in the home. LEDs also last up to 25 times longer than incandescents.
Timers and motion detectors for indoor and outdoor lighting will further save energy and money by ensuring lights are not on when they’re not needed.
Sealing windows and door frames with weather stripping or caulk and removing or covering window air conditioners will prevent drafts.
Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter, according to PSEG Long Island, which says setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room.
Using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use will reduce “phantom power” waste that happens when devices plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off.
Fireplace dampers should be closed when not in use to stop warm air from escaping through chimneys. Furniture and drapes should be moved away from heat sources and any furniture or items blocking vents should be moved. Register or baseboard dampers should be opened.
Curtains or blinds that face the sun should be opened on sunny days to let solar heat in and closed at night to keep warm air inside.
