Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Spring Gardening School is coming up on Saturday, March 9, with a full day of sessions on gardening held in-person and indoors at the Riverhead Charter School in Calverton.
The school has five blocks of programs, with eight sessions running during each block.
Doors will open at 8 a.m., and the program begins at 8:40 a.m., with sessions on grafting rootstock, gardening apps, beneficial insects, container planting, pollinator yards, organic vegetable gardening, food security and “no muss, no fuss” roses. The “B” block will include sessions on berries for birds, pruning, companion planting, winter seed sowing, rain gardens, culinary herbs, frugal gardening and wreaths for all seasons. Next comes native plant design, bonsai, composting, colonial gardens, drip irrigation, seed starting, keystone species and Asian herbs and vegetables.
Following a lunch break, the day continues with floral tips and tricks, succession planting, Long Island natives, spotted lanternfly information, pollinator gardening, green roofs, gardening with deer and microgreens. The final block, running from 2:10 to 3:10 p.m., will include sessions New Perennial gardens, houseplants, seed saving, bountiful soil, pots for pollinators, building raised beds, preserving harvests and rewilding.
Seating is limited, so registrants are asked to rank the top three sessions they wish to attend during each block. Sessions will be filled in order of registration.
Registrants may bring their own lunch or can reserve an assorted sandwich lunch from Wind Country Deli for $15.
