The Remsenburg Academy is hosting a house tour next weekend. The purpose: to show off the bucolic, quiet hamlet to those who haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing it, and of course, to showcase some of the more notable homes and buildings in the area. The tour will be held on Friday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, and will feature five Remsenburg homes, three of which have bay views, the Remsenburg Academy and the Remsenburg Community Church.
The Remsenburg Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Remsenburg Academy property, one of the oldest private academies on Long Island, which dates back to the Civil War. The academy’s board holds several fund raising events each year, according to Remsenburg Academy President, Fred Meyer.
“We are diligent about encouraging people to enjoy and love this wonderful, quiet Hamptons hamlet,” Mr. Meyer said during an onsite interview last week.
The self-guided tour will begin at the Remsenburg Academy building on South Country Road. As the tour progresses and participants arrive at the selected homes, they will be greeted by volunteers at every house.
One of the homes on the tour will be that of Charles Remsen, who founded the hamlet in the late 1800s. His original Remsenburg home, The Remsen Bay House, located on Remsen Lane, is an historic, 11-bedroom, two-story, classic Hamptons-style home. The property has an expansive, open lawn stretching out to the bay.
Remsenburg Academy Board Member Dorothy Labowski said it’s a rare opportunity to view the historic Remsen Bay home and that the tour is great way to experience Remsenburg.
Another house on the tour, located on Cedar Lane West, was built as a romantic fantasy, according to information provided by Marsha Kenny, who is helping with tour publicity. That home features a cupola and widow’s walk with a 360-degree view from Speonk to Westhampton Beach.
Another house on the tour is unique architecturally: it was designed to resemble a boat and is situated right on the bay on Mallard Lane. That home has views from three levels of outdoor decks, a pool overlooking the water and an additional deck that wraps around the entire house.
An eco-sensitive, shingle-style home on Club Court will also be featured. Some of the features include bamboo floors and ceilings.
And a bit of newer construction will also be on view on Basket Neck Lane. That home, which is included on the tour, was completed in 1999.
As a bonus property, participants will also have the opportunity to view the Remsenburg Community Church on South Country Road.
The “Remsenburg Academy House Tour” will be held Friday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature five Remsenburg homes, the Remsenburg Academy and the Remsenburg Community Church. The cost is $40 for those who register early, or $45 on the day of the event. For reservations, or additional information, call 325-8119.
