As the late autumn crispness settles over the Hamptons, a quiet, wonderful frenzy is beginning inside the studios of the Hampton Ballet Theatre School (HBTS). It’s that time of year again: the prelude to the 16th annual production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s cherished “The Nutcracker,” set to grace the stage at Guild Hall in East Hampton this December.

For over a decade and a half, this performance has served as the official, glittering start to the East End’s holiday season. It’s a showcase of dedication, a fantastical journey that the school’s young dancers — the classical training ground’s brightest talents — are preparing to take us on.

The dates are set for this beloved pilgrimage to the Land of Sweets: Friday, December 12, at 7 p.m., Saturday, December 13, at 7 p.m., and a double feature on Sunday, December 14, at noon and 5 p.m.

The driving force behind the enchantment is HBTS Director Sara Jo Strickland, who has not only choreographed the entire ballet, but also contributed to its meticulous visual tapestry. The performance is rich with detail, featuring hand-sewn costumes — the kind that truly make a snowflake shimmer and a flower twirl — crafted by Strickland, Yuka Silvera and Kate McManus. Under the dramatic guidance of lighting designer Sebastian Paczynski, the familiar tale of Clara, the Nutcracker Prince, and the vanquished Mouse King will unfold in vibrant color and light.

For those ready to reserve their passage to this December delight, further details and ticket inquiries can be found by contacting info@hamptonballettheatreschool.com.
